Social Work Major

At St. Kate's, students learn to integrate theory, research and fieldwork with our liberal arts core requirements. In addition, you will have achieved the ten Core Social Work Competencies identified by the Council on Social Work Education, our program’s accrediting body. 

The major consists of 12 courses (44 credits) that are required for the major along with four supporting courses (16 credits). Students are required to complete two Field Placements, 200 hours the junior year and a 400 hours the senior year. It is important that social work course be taken in the order they are presented below.

Supporting Courses (prerequisites)

Students should take these courses during their Freshman and Sophomore years.  

  • PSYC 1000 General Psychology 
  • SOCI 1000 Introduction to Sociology 
  • PSYC 2025 Lifespan Developmental Psychology* 
  • BIOL 1120 Biology of Women/Human Biology* 

* These two courses are pre-requisites for SOWK 3400: Human Behavior in the Social Environment.

Social Work Major Requirements

Course to be taken during Freshman or Sophomore year.

  • SOWK 2810 Introduction to Social Work 

This course is a prerequisite for all Social Work course work or must be taken concurrently with second course taken in the major.

Course to be taken during Sophomore or Junior year.

  • SOWK 3400 Human Behavior in the Social Environment 

This course must be taken prior to senior year Social Work course work or at least concurrently with SOWK 4010.

  • SOWK 3750 Junior Fieldwork* 
  • SOWK 3550 Communication & Interviewing Skills* 
  • SOWK 3910 Social Policy for Social Change** 
  • SOWK 3800 Social Work Research**

Licensure for School Social Workers

The program is approved by the Minnesota Department of Education to recommend candidates for licensure as school social workers, level 1, based upon completion of the program.
