accounting

Accounting majors at St. Kate's are critical, analytical and global thinkers with strong ethical and leadership skills. Our program teaches you how to understand the whole financial picture of an organization — be it small, a nonprofit or Fortune 500 — so you make good business decisions and clearly communicate the implications. You also learn to solve ethical dilemmas and stay true to your own convictions.

Rigorous curriculum

Intensive core courses — from auditing and taxation to financial management and cost accounting — plus classes with an international focus, like "Global Financial Issues," prepare you for diverse fields. You also gain a solid foundation in economics, ethics, business law, psychology or sociology, statistical analysis and technology. Our upper-level accounting electives prepare you for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.

Getting practical

Classes involve discussion, case studies, teamwork and ethics — a curricular commitment that has made us a model for other universities. You conduct an actual audit in the auditing course. You also apply classroom knowledge at a real business in our "Accounting Practicum" or supervised internship course. We'll match you with a company through our Entrepreneur Internship and Professional Partnership programs.

Thriving business scene

St. Kate's is located at the heart of entrepreneurial ventures, not-for-profit agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Within two months of graduation, nearly all St. Kate’s accounting majors secure jobs in their field — with companies such as Cargill, Deloitte & Touche, Ecolab, 3M, Target, PricewaterhouseCoopers and WIPFLI.

Competitive advantage

Women with financial and accounting skills are in high demand and often move into leadership positions. St. Kate's students have — with their ambition, focus, communication skills and ethical values — successfully received scholarships (in their junior and senior years) from Financial Executives International and the Minnesota Society of CPAs.

Faculty experts

Our professors are enthusiastic teachers and diligent researchers, and all have experience in public or private sector accounting. For example, Associate Professor Megan Kalina, CPA, held positions at Coopers & LyBrand and Wells Fargo. They'll challenge you intellectually and help you master the technical and technological side of accounting.
