Major

St. Kate’s offers three concentrations of the chemistry major:

  • Core chemistry concentration
  • American Chemical Society (ACS) certified concentration
  • Biochemistry concentration

You may also receive certification to teach chemistry in secondary schools by completing the core chemistry major with some additional courses in education and the sciences.

Below is a sample academic plan. You can work with an advisor to tailor the courses to your interest.

American Chemical Society (ACS) certified concentration​

To satisfy the requirements for the ACS concentration, you must complete the following courses in addition to those listed above for the core chemistry major:

  • CHEM 4914: Research (4 credits)
  • CHEM 4994: Topics

Biochemistry concentration​

To earn the biochemistry concentration, you must complete the following courses in addition to the core chemistry courses:

  • CHEM 3400: Principles of Metabolism: Applied Biochemistry
  • BIOL 1210, 1220: General Biology I and II
  • BIOL 2800 or 2900: Cell Biology or Genetics

Other changes to the core concentration are as follows:

  • CHEM 3320: Physical Chemistry II or CHEM 4200: Advanced Analytical Chemistry (choose only one)
  • CHEM 4000: Advanced Inorganic Chemistry not required

Writing requirement​

Chemistry majors satisfy writing requirements by completing a specifically designated writing-intensive course (CHEM 4400: Biochemistry) within the chemistry major.

Transfer students or others that complete this course off-campus may satisfy this requirement by completing an alternative course approved by the department chair.
