Continuing Education Units (CEU) - FAQ

What is a CEU?

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized unit of measurement awarded to participants in a qualifying continuing education program. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours in an organized education activity. For instance, if a presentation is six hours long, participants will receive 0.6 CEUs.

CEUs awarded by St. Catherine University are generic continuing education units, which may or may not apply to specific CEU requirements of some professional organizations. CEUs should not be confused with academic credits which are usually earned for educational experiences involving readings, projects, and some form of final evaluation such as a test or paper.

In order for a program to offer CEUs, it must uphold these criteria:

       > Responsible sponsorship. The organization is offering continuing education consistent with its mission and has the professional resources to provide quality programming.

       > Capable direction. The program is well-organized and its structure fosters sharing and applying knowledge.

       > Qualified Instruction. The program has academic content and the presenter(s) have credentials relevant to the topic(s) being presented.
