Master of Science: Nurse Practitioner

The Nurse Practitioner option educates bachelor's-prepared, advanced practice nurses who provide primary care across the lifespan. St. Catherine offers two specialty options with specific clinical content: pediatric and adult-gerontological. Graduates earn a Master of Science in Nursing degree and, if they choose, continue on in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

Next steps

You are admitted directly to a specialty area. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam in their chosen specialty. Graduates of the adult-gerontological option can choose to take certification exams for the Adult Nurse Practitioner or the Adult-Gerontological primary cares specialty.

More than 600 hours of advanced clinical practice experience are completed during these advanced practice courses. Option coordinators work together with you to secure preceptors prior to clinical course work. The option coordinator approves all clinical placements for students in that option. Faculty supervise clinical placements by making visits to each site and arranging conferences with students and preceptors.

The nursing faculty are committed to providing healthcare to underserved populations, including individuals and families in rural areas. Students who wish to pursue clinical experiences in these areas are supported in their efforts.

Specialty Areas

Certification

Upon completion of the Nurse Practitioner option, graduates are eligible to take the nurse practitioner certification examination in their specialty area.

All national credentialing/certification centers require a master’s degree in nursing to sit for the certification exams. These include The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP).

Students in the Nurse Practitioner option earn a Master of Science in Nursing degree. If you are interested in completing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, you may work with your advisor to move directly into St. Catherine's post-master's DNP program after completing your master's.
